HELP! - Newbuild LXR doesn't START / No chaselight / Broken mainboard ???

edited May 15 in Troubleshooting
hi everybody.

i just soldered up the LXR and when i was about to do the Step20 test i get no chaselights after what is, i assume a booting process, in which many leds light up and then go off, leaving the VOICE MODE and the first VOICE on. Pressing START only lights up the START LED, but nothing fashes and also the chaselight doesn't start to run.

From reading the forum, i figured that Step23 of the assembly guide should actually happen before the Step20 test, right?!
So i guess i have a problem with the SD card as well, it's a 2GB micro in an adapter formatted as FAT32. But i am not quite sure how the files are supposed to be arranged on the the card. Is it supposed to be like this:
SDCARDIMAGE/ all the files "loose" ( FIRMAWARE.BIN, P000-029.SND, GLO.CFG and README.TXT)
or
SDCARDIMAGE/SDCardImage (a folder)/ (and there the files: FIRMAWARE.BIN, P000-029.SND, GLO.CFG and README.TXT)

also i haven't soldered the OLED display yet, as i tried to follow the assembly guide step by step...?

Any hints are very welcome. Please hurry!!!

Thanks.

    Now,
i've soldered up the display. seems like i'm running v.37,
but i still have no running chaselight as described in the 20th step of the assembly manual...=(

I've tried updating the firmware (bootloader v.1.2) it says "SD card OK" or the like and starts updating. The display reads: updating...(1/2) and a "progress-lightshow" in the step leds started.
It's taking very long, over half an hour already!
Can that be right, with such a small filesize?

  • Now,
after over an hour of UPDATING...(1/2) i've pulled the plug,
with the result that after boot,
it doesn't say "can't read kits" anymore. GOOD!
unfortunately pressing START still doesn't result in a running chaselight...=(

What to do? What to try?

  • Is it set to voice mode, I think you don't see any running lights in perf and step mode...  not sure!

    Thanks for your reply mixrasta.

Yes, it's set to voice mode, after booting up that has been the default setting: voice mode / voice 1.

    So now,
i have been trying to update the firmware from a 2GB toshiba SD card. The updating progress is as slow as before, running over an hour now, with the progress led bar doing it's progression and the display reading:
updating..(1/2). I wonder how long that might still go on. Unfortunately i haven't found anything about the duration of this process, but i am surprised.

Before that i have been checking all solderpoints with a magnification and to me it all looks good. All ICs are inserted correctly. I got 5.04V on the testing points and as far as i can tell all the menu settings can be adjusted and the function of the knobs seems to be as intended. BUT when hitting START the chaselight is not running and the START LED is not flashing.

After i have aborted the UPDATING again after almost 2 hours. the LXR starts up as before, running vers.37 but still the START button doesn't start the sequence.

I am running the update throught the night now, hoping for a non-frustrating morning...

  • Good morning to y'all (nobody?),

but frustrating for me, after giving the updating process a long time run, nothing has changed from my previous attempts. had to abort the updating (stuck at "updating...(1/2) and everything behaves as described above. useless!

now, i also have reformatted the SD card with a PC instead of a mac, and all the bahaviour is the same still. (stuck at updating the firmware).

as stated above, i've optically checked all solderpoints and they seem good. i will reflow them later today, just in case.

is there anything i could measure to check functionality? i will measure continuity from the sockets to the chips later on today.

    PLEASE HELP.

  • bad news,

when i was checking if the LXR is visible as a USB device on my computer, it wasn't recognized. the power pins measured 3.29V and again all the socket pins to the main board measure continuity...also all pins of the AVR to the socket measured continuity...now i have also tried the LXR with many different PSUs (different ammount of mA) to rule out a wrong power source (i hope).

MIGHT IT BE THAT I GOT A FAULTY MAIN BOARD?
  • Good news(?),
i did some more testing according to the LXR Troubleshooting webpage:

The 74HC165 ICs are responsible for reading the buttons.
If some or all of the buttons are not working, it is most likely due to an error with those ICs.

    • check if all 165 ICs have the right orientation and are in the
right location of the PCB (and not mixed up with the 595 ICs for
      example)
    • check that all 165 ICs sit tight in their sockets. sometimes a leg can be bend below the ic.
    • measure continuity with a multimeter for the following pins:
      • pin 2 of each 165 IC should be connected to pin 28 of the AVR
      • pin 1 of each 165 IC should be connected to pin 27 of the AVR
      • pin 9 of U2 should be connected to pin 29 of the AVR (DIN_DATA)
      • pin 10 of U2 is connected to pin 9 of U5
      • pin 10 of U5 is connected to pin 9 of U6
      • pin 10 of U6 is connected to pin 9 of U12
      • pin 10 of U12 is connected to pin 9 of U10
    Tested, all checks out positive.

measure continuity with a multimeter for the following pins:
    • pin 11 of each 595 IC should be connected to pin 19 of the AVR
    • pin 12 of each 595 IC should be connected to pin 18 of the AVR
    • pin 14 of U3 should be connected to pin 20 of the AVR (DOUT_DATA)
    • pin 9 of U3 is connected to pin 14 of U7
    • pin 9 of U7 is connected to pin 14 of U9
    • pin 9 of U9 is connected to pin 14 of U13
    • pin 9 of U13 is connected to pin 14 of U11
    Tested, all checks out positive.

After startup (showing that vers.37 is running, into VOICE mode, with the VOICE LED and the VOICE1 LED lit)
pressing the START button only result in the START LED lighting up (not flashing) and NO CHASELIGHT through the steps.
Furthermore, when i attempt a firmware update, the LXR behaves just as described above. Running Bootloader 1.2 / SD card OK / updating...(1/2) / neverending progress indication in the sequencer LED section...

By now the bold letters symbolize my level of anxiety caused by the MAL/NON-FUNCTION of the  LXR, i was so much looking forward to it (and payed quite some money for my circumstances for it).

    PLEASE HELP, SOMEONE!!!

  • are you able to set steps in the sequencer?
and have you checked that your bpm is not set to 0?
  • Hi and thanks for your resonance, zabox.
    It's awfully quiet here.

    - No, i am not able to set steps in the sequencer.

    - Yes, the BPM is set higher than zero.

I have now also tested the USB connection also with a microsoft computer (before only with apple) with the same NEGATIVE results, the LXR is not recognized at all. From what i've read in other threats it seems this could be an indicator for a broken(?) mainboard. I have been trying to get a hold of julian about it, but i get no replies...

It seems all i can do is wait, as i really don't know what to check anymore. :(
  • I'll contact you via email shortly.
    Sorry for my late reply!
  • And, everything fine now?
  • Well, it's fine in so far that julian got back to me. he has been too busy with "familiar" things before. We had a friendly email chat and he pointed out one more thing i could check.
    • I have checked that the NRST pin of the mainboard is HI when the device is powered. It had about 3V which is the correct voltage.
    • And i have send him high resolution pictures of my solderjob to take a look at. That looked all fine to him.

So the conclusion from that is that it might be possible that i accidently got a non-programed mainboard.

BUT, right the next day they have send out a new one to me. I'm looking forward to that and hope that it will solve the problems.

  • Ok, good luck!
  • Hurray,

today i finally got the new mainboard! (Thank you Julian!).

UNFORTUNATELY it behaves exactly like the old one (see above).
    • On start up all seems fine, but START doesn't start anything but lighting up (not flashin) the START LED.
    • It gets stuck on updating the firmware (as described above).

I have measured if NRST is HI, it is, and i have measured that the mainboard got it's 3.3V, it has.

NOW I AM OFFICIALLY SERIOUSLY OUT OF IDEAS OF WHERE THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE.

does anyone have a idea what i could test, besides all the things i have measured (see above) already??

I’ve just finished my build and I have the exact same problem as you – everything the same – no chaselight, no USB, can’t update, mainboard volts 3.2v, lights and keys ok, continuity ok etc.

It’s super annoying and disappointing but I think somehow it must be possible to fix it – just need to figure out how!

  • Well,
that's of course a real pity, but i am glad i am not alone with this issue.

I really hope WE can figure out how to find out where the problem is coming from and how to fix it.
A good thing is that i got a quick response from Julian this time, he wanted to get back to me about this problem later...
    • Now, I have now also checked if the USB detection works with the new mainboars, it doesn't.
    • Then i have carefully taken out all ic's from the socket and reflowed ALL solderjoints and measured the continuity AGAIN...still, everything behaves the same. NOT WORKING.

I'm away for a week but good luck working with Julian to get yr LXR running, he just contacted me and is sending me out a new main board - hopefully that will resolve it
  • AHHAAHAHAH!

    J. got back to me and explained that due to new co-workers the shippinf process got mixed up quite a bit and it seems that they have send me now 2 non-programmed mainboards. A third one shall be on it's way soon.

We all hope that solves the problem.

THIS IS A VERY LABOUROUS BIRTH OF A DRUMSYNTH FOR ME!

@mdx: I hope this would solve your problem as well.

    Anyway, i'll keep you updated.
  • yeah, murphys law strikes again #-o

I thought it would be impossible, since we test each boards audio IO, SD card and general functionality before shipping them out. And even have the boxes with programmed and unprogrammed boards in different shelves in different rooms. But somehow the box of programmed boards was just put in the box of non-programmed boards while I was not looking >-)

Time to get the green "all ok" stickers out again to mark them, now that we are more people.

Very sorry for all the inconvenience this caused!

Ugh I've got the exact same problem:

    *No chase light
*USB not recognizable when plugging into to either a mac or pc
*Updating firmware, progress bar leds is at step 14 currently, been running for over an hour
    *Voltage measures 5.00
    *No continuity
    *All solder points looks good

    I ordered mine last week.

Also the LXR Trigger IO complete kit (incl. PCB) is missing the bags of transistors, went through the packing 3 times now and its not there.

  • Update: Julian got back to me via email and is sending me a new programmed board and the missing parts, let's hope this solces the issue.

    Update 2:

After receiving a new mainboard (and missing transistors) everything works :D

  • good for you.
    that's really good news.
i am still waiting for my programmed board. the two now functioning ones i have send back already.

it has been in the mail for a while now, hopefull this week i'll arrive.
it's a month now since i first hoped to get the LXR running. felt like a long time to me.

  • OK,

got the 3rd mainboard today, it had a green sticker and it worked! =)

    AWESOME.

now i only wait for the trigger-out connetor cable to arrive in the mail. and all is settled.
